TV – Spirited (Episode 1.02)

Remember telling you guys about this show with the dentist and ghost last week. Well Henry (the ghost) is Henry Mallet a semi famous punk star, frontman for “The Nerve” who is most likely dead as they really never found the body so he can be dead or in a coma and they don’t know who he is… All right he’s probably dead. As the two try to find more clues to his “death” Henry is causing trouble for Suzy where she talks to Henry at the most inopportune times and its making her look like a nut to everybody, especially her soon to be ex-husband who is already taking advantage of these slip-ups.

Now why this show is posted here. Is it official that Adam is in a poly relationship (Henry as a ghost can go into anybody’s apartment in the building, being dead and all and he intrudes into Adam’s home:

Henry: “Good afternoon, my gorgeous all man family. How are we today?”

Adam's Little Family

It does seem that from the first where Adam and his lovers -they still have no names / Seriously, they are called Adam One and Two- called her an ice queen to second episode where some friendship has been established since Suzy left Verity for them to look after while her sister ambushed her into an intervention.

verity's makeup
Adam's boyfriend #1
Adam's Boyfriend #2

I still don’t know if they are important to the story or just happen to be one of the many groups Henry visits/ Suzy interacts peripherally in the former hotel cum apartment building but the overall storyline and characters are good.

TV – Spirited (Episode 1.01)

Spirited is a new series from W/Foxtel network in Australia. The premise is about Suzy Darling, a stiff type dentist who leaves her egotistical husband Steve and moves her children into a hotel penthouse apartment. The twist is that it seems the apartment or should I say the hotel itself is haunted by a English amnesiac ghost who didn’t make it pass the 1970’s punk era. Apparently he can only be seen by Suzy and the cat that lives there in the hotel. I assume the mystery will be finding out how did “Henry” (he finds out his name through a pendant Suzy wears but they need to touch it together for it to work) the ghost arrive and died in Australia and what does Suzy need to get him to move on.

Now you ask: Why should you care?

Well, I am not 100% sure, but 90%+ that there is poly (secondary or tertiary storyline???) relationship in the show.

Spirited - Suzy and Adam in Elevator

The man (Adam in apt 3) is talking to Suzy.

Adam kiss and talks to the other two about Suzy

Adam reaches into his apartment and kisses both, these are his two companions. He tells them about talking to Suzy.

Adam and Cat

Adam, is the owner of said cat.

Adam's two sleeping companions

Adam turns in the home and watches his two companions sleeping. It looks like he is the only one that is employed.

Whether this is a gay or bisexual triad, it does seem to play out as a poly group. Whether it becomes important to the main ghost/dentist storyline later on or something else is still unknown. I will update if this (Series 1- 8 episode run) relationship becomes important or featured again.

Shortbus 2006 (Unrated Edition)
M/F – M/M – M/M/M – F/F

Oscar AwardSynopsis: [IMDB] Numerous New York City-dwellers come to the exclusive club Shortbus to work out problems in their sexual relationships. Rob and Sophia are a happily married couple, except for the fact that she has never experienced sexual climax. This irony follows her to work, because she is a couples counselor who frequently has to deal with the sexual issues other couples have. Two of her patients are Jamie and James, a gay couple who have been monogamous for five years and counting. James wants to bring other men in to the relationship, and his own history with depression may hint at an ulterior motive. Ceth (Pronounced like Seth) may be the perfect addition to their family, but Caleb, a voyeur from across the street, may have his own ideas about that. Sophia visits Severin, a dominatrix with secrets of her own to reveal.

Review: Sorry this is super short but I wrote this long piece a while ago and lost it and I’m not looking to rewrite again, and this is going by memory.

There are explicit sexual situations but seriously, it’s not about sex. Get past the first ten minutes and the sex will become background, seriously. I was amazed that while the sex did advance certain things in the film it was almost invisible to the way the character’s plots interacted with each other.

It is about the sex therapist who never had an orgasm. The actress who plays her is so believable and earnest as her journey interconnects with everyone. It feels like she’s Alice going through the city full of adventures and strange unique people to find home (her self fulfillment). Others teach by her giving advice or a simple shoulder to cry on. We meet the other people and their dynamics: directly knowing her or connection to her. Their stories are just as unique and interesting to watch. All the characters are relatable and likable, even the ones you don’t care for but it is an interesting look at the character’s dealing with others, their own lives and how they love each other. Music soundtrack is a great bonus.

MReview: Ciao

Ciao
M/M – M&M

Oscar AwardSynopsis:
[Fandango] A man dies very unexpectedly and leaves behind two men: Jeff, his best friend and Andrea, an Italian he’s been corresponding with online. Jeff informs Andrea of Mark’s passing; Andrea writes back to express his shock and sympathies. On a whim, they continue their correspondence and a rapport grows between them. They eventually meet, where they extend their e-mail exchanges into more personal and intimate conversations. They talk about their respective countries, their jobs, their families, their lives. Mostly, they talk about Mark. What began as a tragedy that linked two strangers from different ends of the world becomes a deeply realized friendship that may change their lives forever.

Review:
I really enjoyed this movie and considering the 33% rating at Rotten Tomatoes is starting to tell me that any pro or regular joe review still doesn’t give you a clue to what you might like, including this one you are reading right now.

I cried twice, once at the beginning and the end. It was slow paced but I really like that because I got everything they were trying to accomplish with the movie. Jeff’s best friend dies and then he finds out that he really didn’t know parts of Mark’s life at all such as his correspondence with Andrea. You get the sense that he felt, I don’t know “annoyed” that Mark would share intimate details with a online person than with him.

It was like he spent a good amount of time with somebody (become friends in a slightly possessive and territorial way, especially when Jeff had strong feelings for Mark) and then get sideswiped by new details that this “stranger” is telling him about his friend, because he was developing a relationship outside of Jeff. It was like envy or jealousy put together but not because when Andrea shows up and starts talking about Mark, I think Jeff was a real adult about it instead of being bitter but I will admit and give leeway because he was probably still in grief over his friend’s sudden death and Andrea was a last connection to Mark.

Um, too messy of a review, let’s try this again. Even though the story is about Mark’s death, it is really about Jeff. He asked Andrea to come to Dallas to see who this person that could get Mark’s personal attention in the way Jeff in the many years he known Mark that he could never have. The way he discusses the emails and finding out this “online affair” with his sister suggests that part of it was done unconsciously in regards to the invitation to Dallas. Throughout the two days Jeff doesn’t grieve for him until Andrea shows him a video of Mark’s country singing.

Basically, the last ten minutes of the movie is just that, of Jeff dealing with his grief. Even Andrea and Jeff’s making out in bed felt like Mark’s unfinished business. Andrea is the last part of Mark’s life and it seems to give him permission to let go. (a clue: he stops visiting Mark’s condo.) The last part is open ended with Jeff and Andrea and most times I don’t like that but in this case it actually works for me.

I would give it a recommend to add to collection as I don’t see why the pro reviewers gave it such a low mark.

MReview: Head In The Clouds

Head in the Clouds (2004)
M/F F/F M/F/F

Oscar AwardSynopsis:
[Netflix] John Duigan helmed this sexy film starring Academy Award-winning actress Charlize Theron as Gilda, a flighty-but-charming socialite who finds her true match in Guy (Stuart Townsend), an intellectual Irishman who wants to battle in the Spanish Civil War — and who convinces Mia (Penelope Cruz), Gilda’s confidante, to do the same. But Gilda has other plans that may, in the end, endanger her life more than supporting the war.

Review:
Sorry this isn’t my best in grammar but this is the third time I am trying to write this review because I kept losing the drafts so I am not in the mood to write this over again.

I found this a surprising movie to watch about a temporary triad because it takes place during WWII and because I wasn’t expecting it as I rarely if at all. (Though I should of seen how Gilda acting with her uni boyfriend, which seems to be an open relationship.) I haven’t watched Charlize Theron in a movie but she is known as a good actress (Monster) and the rest of the cast including the man in her life Guy played by Stuart Townsend and the woman Mia played by Penelope Cruz (she was the initial reason I watched the film). It starts pre-WWII and the Spanish Civil War is the big thing which Gilda wants absolutely nothing to do with since Guy and Mia for personal reason wishes to go and volunteer to help the cause which leaves Gilda alone but when WWII arrives, Gilda is with a German solider but at a point of reckoning Guy and the audience is shown another side of Gilda, to which earlier in the film we get glimpses of.

Why did I start in the middle of the movie? Half laziness, part I don’t want to rewrite again. However I think the bulk of story and my opinion starts to mesh for me is in the middle. Before the war Guy and Gilda is what you expect of the late twenties/early thirties characters, well Gilda anyway who still has her family’s money and her daddy complex issues but if I seem nonchalant about these early 30 or so minutes I am not, because even though this movie is through Guy’s point of view, it is really about our girl Gilda and how she changed this man’s life.

You should understand the first 30 minutes of the film is preparing you not for Guy or even Mia character to evolve but is giving you the reasoning and eventual formation of Gilda’s logic until the last minutes of the film where you get to follow along with Guy as he maybe understands Gilda and her love for him.

There are other characters in the movie that are interesting but really who are fulfilling roles that are necessary to get the movie going including Gilda’s college man who at the end gives Guy an important message. Gilda’s father who gives her character some depth to her emotional state.

Remember when I said “temporary triad”, well it’s war so I suggest you prepare yourself that people will die.
