TV – Spirited (Episode 1.02)
Sep 4th
Remember telling you guys about this show with the dentist and ghost last week. Well Henry (the ghost) is Henry Mallet a semi famous punk star, frontman for “The Nerve” who is most likely dead as they really never found the body so he can be dead or in a coma and they don’t know who he is… All right he’s probably dead. As the two try to find more clues to his “death” Henry is causing trouble for Suzy where she talks to Henry at the most inopportune times and its making her look like a nut to everybody, especially her soon to be ex-husband who is already taking advantage of these slip-ups.
Now why this show is posted here. Is it official that Adam is in a poly relationship (Henry as a ghost can go into anybody’s apartment in the building, being dead and all and he intrudes into Adam’s home:

It does seem that from the first where Adam and his lovers -they still have no names / Seriously, they are called Adam One and Two- called her an ice queen to second episode where some friendship has been established since Suzy left Verity for them to look after while her sister ambushed her into an intervention.

I still don’t know if they are important to the story or just happen to be one of the many groups Henry visits/ Suzy interacts peripherally in the former hotel cum apartment building but the overall storyline and characters are good.

TV – Spirited (Episode 1.01)
Aug 29th
Spirited is a new series from W/Foxtel network in Australia. The premise is about Suzy Darling, a stiff type dentist who leaves her egotistical husband Steve and moves her children into a hotel penthouse apartment. The twist is that it seems the apartment or should I say the hotel itself is haunted by a English amnesiac ghost who didn’t make it pass the 1970’s punk era. Apparently he can only be seen by Suzy and the cat that lives there in the hotel. I assume the mystery will be finding out how did “Henry” (he finds out his name through a pendant Suzy wears but they need to touch it together for it to work) the ghost arrive and died in Australia and what does Suzy need to get him to move on.
Now you ask: Why should you care?
Well, I am not 100% sure, but 90%+ that there is poly (secondary or tertiary storyline???) relationship in the show.

The man (Adam in apt 3) is talking to Suzy.

Adam reaches into his apartment and kisses both, these are his two companions. He tells them about talking to Suzy.

Adam, is the owner of said cat.

Adam turns in the home and watches his two companions sleeping. It looks like he is the only one that is employed.
Whether this is a gay or bisexual triad, it does seem to play out as a poly group. Whether it becomes important to the main ghost/dentist storyline later on or something else is still unknown. I will update if this (Series 1- 8 episode run) relationship becomes important or featured again.

The Prisoner (2009)
I didn’t know they were remaking “The Prisoner”. I watched the original series as a child on PBS. But this time is premiering on the AMC channel (combo producing of AMC and ITV) and from the previews it looks like an action action miniseries than the cerebral action television show of the 60’s. Either way it has Ian McKellen (as #2) and James Caviezel (as #6). I’m not a fan of this decade’s film and television TPTB’s need to remake and recycle every thing from the past but the battle between #6 and #2, whether action or cerebral, is something I really want to watch. So I go again into the breach and give hope that this is going to be good (It has Magneto and the Outlander, what could go wrong.
). It premieres November 09. See the 9 minute trailer below.
Synopsis:
[AMC] A man known as Six (Jim Caviezel) finds himself trapped in a bizarre place called the “The Village” led by a man known as Two (Ian McKellen). Two holds the secrets of escape, and Six must defeat him — or else stay in The Village forever.

MReview: Velvet Goldmine

Velvet Goldmine (1998)
M/M M/F
Synopsis:
[Netflix] Ten years after British glam-rocker Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) fakes his assassination onstage and disappears from view, tabloid journalist Arthur Stuart (Christian Bale) is dispatched to deconstruct the legend of the bisexual pop star. In the process of interviewing Slade’s cohorts and colleagues, Stuart gradually strips away the veneer of makeup and glitz, revealing the empty core of both the man and the music.
Review:
I enjoyed it, even when I wondered why I was watching it. Glam Rock isn’t my thing so I attached myself to the things I did like and all the actors is what kept me interested. I mean this movie had Christian Bale, Ewan McGregor and Jonathan Rhys Meyers and all of them in undress and at certain times touching each other… well that alone made my day. Yeah, and the songs were good.
It actually had a good twist towards the end even though by this time I wasn’t really interested like Arthur’s publisher what happened to Brian Slade. The parts I did enjoy were how teenager Arthur connected to Brain Slade or should I say the glam rocker’s persona. Slade wasn’t afraid of being himself and saying he was bisexual. (You could see how powerful a media personality can influence on how, whether good or bad on mass; this connection can be important to a young person trying to find their way.) However in truth, the real Brian Slade wouldn’t be considered a good reference for anyone’s looking up to and I think what I did like is the adult Arthur’s discovery of that as well.
Secondly, I like the fact that was the most time I heard the word bisexual in all connotations in a movie. Not liking was probably the behavior associated with it. I don’t mind the bad stuff mixed with the good because it is what it is. The good was what I said before but it seemed overtaken with the bad. Or maybe I don’t know what I am talking about and just say it was the 70’s.
Do rent or buy it, either way watch it and you like it.

MReview: Where the Truth Lies
Jan 22nd
Where the Truth Lies [Unrated Theatrical Edition] (2005)
M/M M/F
Synopsis:
[Netflix] Twenty years after beloved comedy team Vince (Colin Firth) and Lanny (Kevin Bacon) split up, journalist Karen O’Connor (Alison Lohman) investigates the mystery behind the duo’s demise in this crime drama. Back in the 1950s, Vince and Lanny were the darlings of showbiz, but then a beautiful girl was found dead in their hotel room, and though both funnymen had alibis, their longtime friendship ended. Can Karen uncover the truth behind the tragedy?
Review:
Okay: absolutely loved the mystery, the backstory, the flashfowards, but mostly I love that Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth were naked. I’m not saying naked for titillating purposes but I do like nudity and simulated sex in a film where it makes sense to have it. It was best because they were men, who for all purpose have a reasonably popular careers and they performed these scenes that only less popular male actors have done. Now I am not saying they’re brave because then I would have to say that male porn stars are superbrave for performing actual sex for us to enjoy, strikes me of hypocrisy. However it is the risk they took that I am impressed by as Hollywood still makes it hard for male actors to do these roles without stigma.
Now review it.
I love the movie, get it for your collection. I could say a lot about the movie but why, these actors, all of them are proven winners so getting them together seems a no-brainer. It was great just watching them do their work, especially Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth. I know this movie is about the reporter Karen but I would sometimes forget why she was there and preferred they stay in the past and watch those two work. Colin’s Vince beating the shit out of the guy in the bathroom was so… I hate to say cool, but it was as he was protecting his partner from that man’s bigotry. It was like they used Vince’s Englishman stereotype on the Americans and totally forgot they have not so proper gentlemen in England too.
Yeah, watch the movie.

Review: Donald Strachey Mysteries [Shocked to the System]
Jan 5th
Shocked to the System (2006) Made for Television
M/M
Synopsis:
Strachey’s being asked to help one Paul Hale, the supposed poster boy for the Phoenix Foundation, a ‘turn gay people straight’ institute run by Dr. Trevor Cornell and his wife Lynn. Paul is soon found dead and the implications are suicide. But Strachey suspects foul play and he begins his own style of investigation.
Review:
Between the two that were made so far, I prefer this one. It had more elements of a mystery that kept me engaged then Third Man Out, the first outing of the series.
I like the fact that Donald gets caught up in a mystery he doesn’t get until the very end and recurring character of the hotel clerk as I took and instant like to him and even like the cop that occasionally pops up and in this one helps Donald without helping him.
I did like the flashback of Donald and his time in the army with his first love and what was implied in the first movie is explained here of Donald’s past. The thing is that I don’t like was the sugary tone of the Donald/Timothy romance but that might be just me since I tend not to like romance movies in general but it was a bit syrupy; so the balance of Donald’s past romance gave it a counterbalance.
(Honestly this might be in the other movie, I can’t remember which) The other part was Donald’s crisis of being a gay man and wondered what his life could of been like if he kept quiet and continued in the army, it was a good piece of story telling and Chad Allen’s acting pulled it off for me. Which is sad because part of the syrupy nature of Sebastian Spence Timothy’s answer made me think he could had better dialogue that didn’t sound like happy ending soap opera and not sounded like he really didn’t give Donald’s question real thought.
Overall I enjoyed the movie and can’t wait to see the next one in the series.

Review: Donald Strachey Mysteries [3rd Man Out]
Jan 5th
3rd Man Out (2005) Made for Television
M/M
Synopsis:
A gay detective is hired to find who has been been threatening a notorious member of the gay community noted for outing people. Donald Strachey is asked to protect a gay man he hates. When that client is killed, he hunts down who is responsible.
Review:
I didn’t like the gay evil outer, I tried coming up with a better name but honestly I didn’t like him because he assumed a role he thought was his calling and he was nothing but a sleazeball. However I loved Chad Allen and it was nice seeing him in this, he played this character well and his partner as I as wondering since 1st wave where the hell did Sebastian Spence go? Now I know.
I don’t see the Nick/Nora aspect but between Donald/Tim I see a lovely romance that I get. If nothing else this was an enjoyable movie.

Review: No Night Is Too Long
Jan 5th
No Night Is Too Long (2002) Made for Television
M/M M/F
The facts: It is based on a mystery novelist Ruth Rendell book of the same name.
Synopsis:
Tim Cornish is an attractive young man who falls in lust paleontologist Ivo Steadman until Ivo tells him that he loves him. Then everything falls apart. Ivo takes Tim to Alaska for a fossil cruise he’s working. For the week Ivo leaves him to take another lecturer’s place on the earlier cruise and leaves Tim to fall for the beautiful Isabelle and she’s all he can think about even wanting to remove Ivo from the equation all together. On the cruise Tim avoids Ivo and when they reach the island Tim and Ivo fight leaving Ivo there for dead.
Review:
It reads more like a thriller than a mystery since we are actually showed the end where Tim is narrating the past. From what I understand it was never put on DVD and they scenes with Tim are more graphic than BBM but they work well and the actor who portrays Tim (Lee Williams) plays him well but it is wishful thinking that Tim could of been with Ivo but he treated the people who loved him like shit so it’s only I guess karma that he doesn’t receive or deserve it back. I think Tim at the end knows it too.
